Vaccines

Vaccination stimulates the body’s immune system to prevent disease caused by viruses and bacteria. Vaccines generally are administered via injection. They contain all or part of the infectious agent that has been inactivated or weakened to trick the immune system into producing antibodies and special cells that will attack a specific virus or bacterium.

Three million lives are saved every year by vaccination. Vaccines against the six common disease of childhood (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, tuberculosis and poliomyelitis) are administered to 8-% of the world’s children, so that every year 750,000 children are saved.

Sanofi Pasteur R&D is focused on two areas: developing new preventive vaccines and improving existing vaccines. Another specific area of research concerns new therapeutic vaccines to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS and cancers. Sanofi Pasteur is present in over 150 countries, hence able to meet the needs of 80% of the world’s population.
